Notary certification vs apostille — where Thailand stands

An apostille is a single certificate that replaces the whole embassy legalisation chain between member states; notarial certification is the underlying act that an apostille may later authenticate. Thailand acceded to the Convention on 30 June 2026 and it enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Until that date, documents leaving Thailand still follow the MFA-then-embassy route, so plan any 2026 filing on the existing chain.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a Thai apostille today?

No. Thailand acceded on 30 June 2026 and the Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Before that date the MFA issues legalisation, not apostilles. Information current as of August 2026. Requirements change — confirm with the authority that will receive the document before you file. Acceptance is at their discretion.

Will an apostille remove the need for a notarial attorney?

No. A private document such as a power of attorney generally must be notarised first; the apostille then authenticates that act. The apostille replaces the embassy step, not the notarial step.

What happens to documents legalised before 28 February 2027?

A legalisation already affixed does not disappear, but whether a foreign authority still accepts it depends on that authority's own rules and validity window. Confirm before relying on an older certificate.

My destination is not in the Convention — does anything change?

No. For non-member destinations the traditional chain of notarisation, MFA legalisation and embassy legalisation continues to apply after 2027.
