Notary certification vs certified translation — two different guarantees

These certify entirely different things. A notarial attorney confirms who signed, or that a copy matches the original; a certified translator confirms that the target text faithfully reflects the source. A notary does not validate translation quality, and a translator cannot witness your signature. Australian and New Zealand filings usually need NAATI certification, while embassies in Bangkok more often want a notarised and legalised original with an attached translation.

Notarial certificationchoose this when

  • You need a signature witnessed or a true copy certified
  • The document will continue through MFA and embassy legalisation
  • A bank, court or registry asks for a notarised document

Certified translation (NAATI / sworn)choose this when

  • You are filing with an Australian or New Zealand authority that names NAATI
  • The requirement is about the translation being certified, not the signature
  • A university or professional body asks for a translator's certification number

Frequently asked questions

Can a notary certify that my translation is correct?

No. A notarial attorney can witness the translator's signature on a declaration of accuracy, but the guarantee of accuracy comes from the translator, not the attorney. Information current as of August 2026. Requirements change — confirm with the authority that will receive the document before you file. Acceptance is at their discretion.

Does a NAATI translation need to be notarised too?

Usually not for Australian or New Zealand immigration filings. Notarisation is added when a third party — an embassy, a court or a registry — requires an authenticated original in the same bundle.

Which comes first if I need both?

Translate after the original has received every stamp it needs, so the translation reflects the final document. Translating a document that later gains extra stamps often forces a re-translation.

Is a translation agency stamp the same as certified translation?

Not necessarily. Some authorities accept an agency declaration; others require a named certified practitioner. Read the requirement literally and match the wording.
