Notarisation vs legalisation by the destination embassy

Notarisation is the first link and embassy legalisation is usually the last. The embassy of the destination country in Bangkok confirms that the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs stamp is genuine, which is what makes the document usable in that country. Until the Apostille Convention enters into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027, this final step remains necessary for most destinations.

Can I skip the MFA and go straight to the embassy?

No. Embassies in Bangkok verify the Thai MFA stamp, so the MFA step must come first. Documents presented without it are returned. Information current as of August 2026. How long is embassy legalisation valid?

There is no single answer — many authorities require the whole bundle to be recent, often within three to six months. Ask the receiving office for its validity window before you file.

Will the 2027 Apostille change remove the embassy step?

For destinations that are Convention member states, an apostille is expected to replace embassy legalisation once the Convention is in force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Non-member destinations keep the current chain.
