NAATI Certified vs Recognised Practising Translator

Certified Translator is the tested credential and the one most authorities expect. Recognised Practising is granted for languages with no NAATI test available and is evidence of recent, regular practice rather than a passed exam. For Thai–English, certified practitioners exist, so submit a Certified Translator stamp unless the authority says otherwise.

How do I check which credential my translator holds?

Search the practitioner number from the stamp in the NAATI Practitioner Directory at naati.com.au; the listing shows the credential type and expiry. Information current as of August 2026. Requirements change — always confirm with the authority that will receive your documents. Approval is at their discretion.

Is Certified Provisional accepted?

It is a genuine NAATI credential, but some authorities prefer full Certified Translator. Ask before lodging if the requirement is strict.

Does an expired stamp invalidate an old translation?

Translations certified while the credential was valid usually remain acceptable, but some authorities ask for a recent certification. Re-certification is quick if needed.
