NAATI Certified Translation vs Notary Public (Thailand)

A NAATI practitioner certifies the wording of the translation. A Thai Notarial Services Attorney — a lawyer registered with the Lawyers Council of Thailand — certifies a signature, a copy or an oath, and says nothing about translation quality. Thailand has no civil-law notary public; the notarial attorney is the Thai equivalent. Many packages need both: the notarised original plus the NAATI translation of it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a notary in Thailand certify my translation instead of NAATI?

A notarial attorney can witness the translator's signature, but that is not a NAATI certification. Where NAATI is named in the requirement, only a NAATI practitioner satisfies it. Information current as of August 2026. Requirements change — always confirm with the authority that will receive your documents. Approval is at their discretion.

Do I need notarisation before the NAATI translation?

Only if the receiving authority asks for a notarised original. The translation can be produced from the notarised document so both stamps appear in the same bundle.

Is a Thai notarial attorney recognised overseas?

Yes, when the signature is further legalised through the Thai MFA and, where required, the destination embassy. Recognition remains the receiving authority's decision.
